字典学习

从一个离开美国的国人那里得到一本书，《A First Dictionary of Cultural Literacy》，89年出版的，虽然是旧了点，但是看看还是能学到挺多东西的。

This dictionary is divided into twenty-one sections, each devoted to what you should know about a subject such as arts, mathematics, or world geography by the time you finish sixth grade.虽然是六年级就应该知道的知识，但对于英语是第二外语的，还是有很多新东西的，就重新做一次小学生吧。

今天开始从头把字典里的一些东西的学习记录在这里，呵呵。

字典分21个sections，第一个是Proverbs，谚语。

1.Actions speak louder than words.
It is safer to rely on what people do rather than what they say.
第一个就是“行胜于言”呀，看着真亲切呀，不禁想起礼堂前面的日晷……

2.All for one and one for all.
The proverb itself comes from the book the three Musketeers, by Alexandre Dumas.
我为人人，人人为我。没想到这个p2p的口号原来这么有来历呀，居然出自大仲马，呵呵~~不过三个火枪手，没看过呢。

3.All's well that ends well.
In any effort, what matters is a good outcome.
这句话还真不好懂，也没有别的注解。wiki里居然有条目——
All's Well That Ends Well is a comedy by William Shakespeare, and is often considered one of his problem plays, so-called because they cannot be easily classified as tragedy or comedy. It was probably written in later middle part of Shakespeare's career, between 1601 and 1608. It is one of Shakespeare's least performed plays. The play is based on a tale (3.9) of Boccacio's Decameron.
居然还是Shakespeare的一个作品名称，ft
另外，张国荣周星驰的《家有喜事》的英文名也叫《All's Well, Ends Well》，不太明白……

4.an apple a day keeps the doctor away.
有个同学的msn的签名就是这个，呵呵。高中的时候一点不吃苹果的，一年大概只吃1-2个苹果吧，记得那时候，同宿舍的jh真是幸福，经常吃苹果的，还有家里带来的好菜，都被我们吃，呵呵~~

5.April showers bring May flowers.
Unpleasant things may bring about good things, just as rainy days cause flowers to bloom later on.
四月雨带来五月花。感情世界各地四月都多雨呀。也说明看事物要多面，呵呵

6.Beauty is only skin deep.
美国人有这么一种说法：skin-deep，Deep就是深浅的深，skin-deep从字面来解释就是：像皮肤那样深，实际上也就是中文里说的“肤浅”。所以这句话的意思就是，美貌只是表面现象，换句话也就是说，外表的美貌并不能说明这个人的本质。:)

7.Beggar can't be choosers.
People who have very little can't be fussy about what they get.
做乞丐的，是不能对所获得的有什么挑剔的，或者翻译得传神些，要饭就不能嫌馊，:)。水浒里有说：饥不择食，寒不择衣，慌不择路，贫不择妻。

8.The best-laid plans of mice and men oft go awry.
NO matter how carefully you plan, something may still go wrong.
这句话不知道中文应该怎么说确切。知道的告诉我一声。
